The work of the Economics & Insights team is mostly related to economic data analysis, modelling and advice. A more recently added function relates to providing insights from business perspectives on key issues. As Senior Adviser you will be responsible for this Commercial Insights function within the team, which monitors and communicates government announcements, as well as business perspectives on aspects of the economy, business environment and government policy related to exports and foreign direct investment. Our ideal candidate has a strong understanding of government priorities, policy and initiatives related to exports and foreign direct investment and possesses excellent written and verbal communication skills. It is not a requirement that the successful candidate be an economist. The Commercial Insights function is qualitative in nature and focuses on communicating government announcements and business perspectives to staff in Austrade and other departments. Experience and qualifications relevant to trade and foreign direct investment policy would be beneficial. The key duties of the position include • Austrade directly communicates with businesses to understand their perspectives on aspects of the economy, business environment and government policy and initiatives. A key duty of the Senior Adviser will be synthesising this commercial intelligence received by post and onshore staff into themed papers on key issues. These papers will be for senior staff in Austrade and other agencies to advocate the views of businesses and to inform thinking and policy development. The development of these papers will also involve consultation with senior staff within Austrade and liaising with post and onshore staff that are more directly connected to these businesses to gain clarity on their expressed views. • Communicating the opportunities and key trends from commercial insights, as well as responding to requests for specific insights into business perspectives on issues and regions of interest. • Providing presentations to Austrade staff and leading discussions about key learnings from commercial insights. • Monitoring and summarising government announcements, and writing short topical articles to accompany these announcements, as well as coordinating and reviewing content and input from others. • Working with Converlens software in developing survey questions for post and onshore staff to gain commercial insights, as well as managing and analysing responses to survey questions. • Utilising excellent written communication skills and understanding of government priorities and policy in the exports and foreign direct investment space to support other work by the Economics & Insights team in relation to economic data requests, reports, and advice.
