Senior Policy and Program Officers

The ACCU Scheme Policy and Legislation team leads Scheme policy advice and analysis, consultation on and implementation of the reforms to the ACCU Scheme. As a high priority for the government, the work is dynamic, complex and evolving and covers a unique intersection of policy, economics and science. Immediate priorities include legislation reform, delivery of budget commitments policy analysis and stakeholder consultation on the next stage of reforms. The Scheme intersects with decarbonisation across the economy and the team is actively engaged in development of the sectoral decarbonisation plans and uses data and evidence to continually build public understanding of the Scheme and its outcomes. The key duties of the position include The position involves a varied program of work, with a strong focus on strategic planning, project/contract management, policy development, communication and stakeholder engagement. The successful applicant will undertake work that is complex and/or sensitive in nature and work under limited direction with reasonable autonomy and accountability. You will exercise both initiative and judgement in the interpretation of policy and in the application of practices and procedures. You will provide detailed technical, professional, and/or policy advice in relation to complex problems related to the ACCU Scheme. The role may have a considerable level of public contact in relation to difficult or sensitive issues and will involve liaising with a range of stakeholders in a representational capacity. We are looking for people who want a challenge and who have an interest in carbon crediting and climate policy. The successful candidate will: Support ministers, senior department executive and Committees, including by preparing advice, briefs, ministerial correspondence, issues papers, public communication materials and reports. Engage and negotiate with internal and external stakeholders to provide timely briefing and accurate reporting. Conduct research and analysis to develop and inform timely, high-quality policy advice. Provide secretariat support to facilitate strong governance and collaboration between agencies. Apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills to address issues relevant to climate policy and associated legislation. Contribute to the team's work as required. What we are looking for Knowledge and experience experience in policy development, including the ability to investigate and source key information to support decision making, or strategic communications well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills, and an eye for detail adaptability, initiative and sound judgement and decision-making capabilities experience working with a range of stakeholders to deliver shared outcomes the organisational skills and ability to work across multiple priorities with minimal direction, including under tight deadlines experience in communicating technical, scientific, economic, legislative, or policy concepts to a wide range of audiences understanding of climate change policy (desirable) a degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field (desirable). Skills and capabilities To support the various roles the successful applicants will have a demonstrated ability to: Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to prepare quality briefings, papers, reports and submissions for ministers, senior management, committees, and Government decisions. A high level of personal drive and integrity, taking personal responsibility and initiative for meeting objectives and progressing high-quality work to critical deadlines. Good interpersonal skills to build and cultivate productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders, to deliver shared outcomes. Solve problems, research and analyse issues, make evidence-based decisions using sound judgement, multi-task, and work as part of a team (or teams). Thrive in a fast-paced, energetic environment and in a high-performing team.
